KARA SCOTT POKER | MUSIC INSPIRATION

Recently, several leading ladies of the poker world got together to talk about many of the issues that female poker players face. The article pointed out that “Statistically speaking, women’s participation in live poker is still very minimal, not even close to comprising 10% of either tournament fields or cash game seats in poker rooms all over the world.” One of those women-participators in particular, Kara Scott, is maximizing her gender’s presence in the game. She’s been one of the most recognizable and adored faces of poker since ESPN recruited her to report from the poker sidelines.

If you’re not familiar with the gambling world, then you may remember Scott from the film world, in such movies as the 2008 martial-arts flick Sucker Punch, where she got to show off her muay thai skills. This is a woman with a bunch of hobbies and side hustles. So, how does she wind down when she’s not beating people up on the big screen or stacking chips on the poker tables? By listening to music, of course. “I’ve always been a fan of obscure new music but I’m not really great at finding it myself,” she wrote on her blog. “Thankfully my friends are MUCH cooler than I am and they give me great suggestions.”

It looks like her friends have pretty good ears. Below, are two of the acts Scott listens to and that we’ve also kept our eyes on. Little Green Cars – Based out of Dublin, Ireland, this nifty, pop-rock quintet is mostly known for their song named after the author of To Kill A Mockingbird, “Harper Lee.” At the end of the video for the song, the band’s lead singer, Stevie Appleby, sings from an interrogation room, “I put mice in the kitchen to see if you’d kill them/ you let them live, now there’s 12,000 kids/ you let them breed now I’ve got mouths to feed/ you let them stay now they’ve taken my place/ you left them alone now they’re eating.” He’s just murdered his girlfriend because she loves animals.

At least he and his band got a pretty song out of it. Lake Street Dive – Called “The future of pop music” by New York Music Daily, this jazz-pop quartet assembled in Boston while they each attended the New England Conservatory. Lead singer Rachael Price is a much of a bad-ass face of the group as Kara Scott is the bad-ass female face of poker, so this matchup makes sense. Most of the world fell in love with Lake Street Dive after some key performances on The Late Show With David Letterman and The Colbert Report.

After that, the band gained traction with an EP of mostly covers, Fun Machine, and their new album, Bad Self Portraits. It’s an album that moves back and forth from gospel to blues to alt-rock, but with soul sprinkled everywhere.
